Critical Review #4

  1. I chose to review Damian’s The “D” Minute blog because I have found his arguments in class to be a differing viewpoint from my own many times. However, just as in class, he is very passionate about his subject matter and willing to defend his views. In many ways, he used it as a means to further expand on his viewpoint and has proven himself and his blog to be intelligent and well-informed.

I really liked the tone of this blog. While he had many items on his main screen, I found the layout easy to follow and very professionally done. I liked the scrolling link at the top of the page, the fact he had a place to put the critical reviews, and was focused on linking to relevant articles. All the extras aside, he did a wonderful job of focusing on the most important part: his writings. This is where the blog really shines. He has clear writings that are easy to understand and draw the reader into his discussion. I found myself talking to the screen in an effort to continue the debate and was really engaged in the topic, regardless if I agreed or not.

If I were to offer some areas that were less successful, I found myself somewhat distracted by the multiple colors used in the main area at the top of the blog. I also must admit I’m not a fan of the advertisements, especially since I didn’t believe this was a commercial blog that would need them. One last item would be that his tone from time to time is very negative and derisive. While he may have a very negative opinion about a specific subject, I found his in-your-face opinion somewhat off-putting and found myself skimming those sections.

Overall, while we have differing opinions, I would definitely recommend his blog to others. I think his arguments are well thought out and he does clearly express his opinion.
